Cortland Memorial Day Program

The Cortland Veterans Memorial Committee and the American Legion Post 540 of Cortland have announced that the Cortland Memorial Day observance at the Veterans Memorial located in Point Park, which is in front of Cortland Mower. The program will honor theveterans whomade the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

Ian McAleer, chairman of the committee, emphasized that the public is invited, andeveryone should bring a folding chair. He commented that Col. Robert B. Mangold(U.S. Army retired) will be the emcee, and the guest speaker will be  Lt. Commander Michael Popadak (U.S. Navy retired) who enlisted in the U.S.  Navy, rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, and continued to climb in rankto Lt. Commander when he retired.

The observance will also include an invocation by Pastor David Vensel, the National Anthemsung by Maggie Crouch, the presentation of colors by D.A.V. Disabled American Veterans, and a rifle salute and taps by American Legion Post 540.

On behalf of the committee, Ian McAleer expressed their thanks to the Four Seasons Garden Club of Cortland for donating the flags hanging on the back fence at the memorial.  He also recognized the Cortland City service dept. staff for their continued maintenance work at the memorial site.
